Buzzing exercises
Buzzing with the mouthpiece can help you establish a routine for setting your embouchure. Buzzing can also be utilized when warming up before you play on the trumpet. Exclusive buzzing will not make you a great player, but combined with regular practice on the trumpet, it can help with ear training and breath support.
The following exercises are for the beginning trumpet player. Set a metronome while playing to help create consistency in your preparation and sound production.
The following exercises are for the beginning trumpet player. Set a metronome while playing to help create consistency in your preparation and sound production.
For the first exercise, take a full breath, and push the air for all four beats, keeping a consistent sound. You may choose a pitch to maintain as you play the exercise. (If you need a reminder, click here for the buzzing video from the starting page.)
Make sure you are using the tongue to interrupt the air for each note. If matching pitch is difficult at first, pick any pitch and make sure the interval is accurate. Sing the exercise, then buzz, to help learn the intervals. If you want to match the written pitches, sing and buzz along with the sound recordings next to each exercise.

For this exercise, make sure you have enough air to play all the notes within the slur. When you play notes that are slurred together, your tongue starts the first note, ends the last note, and does not interfere with the notes in between. There are two ways to play the last four measures.

Now you have three pitches to play. You can tongue or slur this exercise.

This example helps you hear the difference between a minor third and a major third.
|
Can you recognize the song in the final exercise? Again, if the written pitches are difficult, use pitches that are in your range, but maintain the correct intervals.

Open valve exercises
Now try using the trumpet, but don't worry about the fingers yet! Here are some exercises that are all in open position. Concentrate on the sound, and make sure both your left and right hands are in the proper playing positions.
Again, like when you were buzzing with just the mouthpiece, take a full breath, set the embouchure, and play. The inside of your mouth will make adjustments for the low C.

This exercise adds articulation and rhythm. You can play along with the audio track.
Now you can try it by echoing the audio track.

If you want to try some different combinations on your own, here is just a rock beat to play along with. Have some fun with it! You can also experiment by adding a valve or playing more than one partial!
